Watching A Child’s Program Over And Over Again: From A Parent’s Point of View

Hi everyone!  I hope that you have had a great week and a great Friday.  I know that last week I touched on how anime can be a symbol for hardship breakthroughs for both children and adults.  So, this week, I want to talk about something that I have noticed recently that both my husband and I are doing, which is watching our daughter’s program over and over again.  Our daughter has been watching her shows on Netflix non-stop to the point where my husband and I can sing every word and do every dance move.

I know that my parents did the same thing, so I guess it’s just called parenting.  I remember my mom always telling me that I would have to watch The Lion King non-stop and I would reenact being one of the lions, which I now remember that I used to love Scar, so I was probably trying to be like him.  Anyways, it got me thinking of why do they do that?  I mean, why do children like to watch the same program over and over again?  Then, I started to remember on how The Lion King always made me feel empowered for some reason.  Like, I would imagine that I was actually in the movie.  Also, if you remember from last week I didn’t have many friends then, so I am wondering that the reason could be is that I liked the movie so much that I thought they were my friends.

I know that sometimes in my daughter’s programs, they talk about friends, so I am wondering if that is it.  Or, that it’s just their age and they are beginning to use their imagination.  Regardless, I know that it does get annoying because we have all been there, but I can’t help to think that it is too cute.  I mean, when my daughter goes and spins around, singing and dancing, I can’t help but want to do it too.  Then, we have ourselves a little dance party with snacks afterwards.  When that happens, it got me thinking that seeing these programs over and over really helps you understand your child more.  You are bringing yourself to their world and what they like at that moment and celebrating it with them.

It’s actually quite amazing when you think about it that way.  Once you actually start playing with your child and seeing their imagination take off and use anything and everything to accomplish their goals, you will actually start feeling proud of them.  I know I definitely have.  I know I wouldn’t have thought of some of the things that my daughter uses like her table as a boat, bringing us some instruments and starting an orchestra/band, and using some of her buckets to make a castle.  I am quite pleased in knowing that, even if I have to watch programs over and over, that they spark her imagination so much in a way that I can’t.

Another example would be that we took her to go see the movie The Cat Returns and we all loved it so much that we had to get the DVD, so we did.  Well, yesterday and today, we have watched this movie over and over again, but she loves it.  She loves it so much that she starts acting like a cat and when they get into a scuffle or running in a maze, she acts right along side with them as if she is in the movie.  She actually started using furniture and things around the house as if that was the maze.  I would have never thought of that.  Not only did she use her imagination, but it also helped with her problem solving skills, hand and eye coordination, etc.  I am amazed at this and so proud of my daughter for accomplishing her goals, even if she is 4.

That just goes to show you that the world is changing every day and you can learn new things every day.  Even though you are a parent, sometimes your child will amaze you and teach you a few things.  Maybe it isn’t such a bad idea to watch programs or movies over and over again.  If they are helping in some ways that you can’t, then that’s actually helpful.  So, instead of us getting frustrated like I have, I think we should start celebrating it and get in the moment with our children.  Being a stay at home mom and not seeing much of the outside because of weather, it actually turns into quite a fun day!  Well, I need to get going to watch the same movie for the hundredth time, but I will be acting it out with her this time.  I hope you all have a great weekend and I will see you in the next post!
