Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great Friday! This post is another short one as we just found out that my daughter has the hand, foot, and mouth virus. So, I have been busy taking care of her.
Anyway, let me tell you a little back story before we move on, July has been always a busy month for me because some of my family members plus my daughter has a birthday almost a week apart from each other. So, it’s always busy with making cakes, cards, presents, etc. However, when I asked my daughter on what kind of cake or party she wanted, she replied with ,”My Neighbor Totoro.” For those that don’t know what this is, My Neighbor Totoro is a Studio Ghibli movie. It’s amazing! It’s so sweet and it has such a great story!
Anyway, I didn’t know how to make a Totoro party happen because it is such a task to find anything that specific for parties, but the one thing I could do was make a Totoro cake. So, I went to my trusted friend, Pinterest, for ideas on how to decorate a cake to make it look like Totoro. I found plenty of ideas and I made out my plan so that way I would have time for everything.
Well, the day of her party came and I started making my usual chocolate cake and some Totoro sugar cookies. The cookies are the semi healthy sugar cookies that I posted earlier, you can click here to check it out. I also got my Totoro cookie cutters here. Anyway, both the cake and cookies turned out perfect, so it was time for the decorating.
However, I tried making my own fondant, but it came out to be a HUGE mess. So, I went to icing the cake and I got all prepared with the different pipe tips and bags. Well, that didn’t turn out great either because the tips kept popping off. Ugh…I was getting frustrated and everyone was waiting for me to finish so that we could sing happy birthday to the birthday girl. So, I started to think quickly on how I could turn this around and I thought of this idea. If I made the icing to look like a tree top with the Totoro cookies sitting on top, then that would good…right??
It was my only option and it actually turned out to be pretty cute! It was also a hit with my daughter, which I was so happy. At first, I thought I had failed because I had this set image in my mind that it would be the perfect cake, but it didn’t turn out the way that I had hoped. But…in the end…it didn’t matter what it looked like…all that mattered was the smile on my daughter’s face and how happy she was that she got a Totoro cake and cookies.
My point to this story is that you don’t have to be a professional baker to make the “perfect” cake or you don’t have to be a creative decorator. It’s the thought that counts and as long as your child is happy with it, then there is no need to worry about how it comes out. Welp, that is all for this post. Again, I have to go and take care of my daughter as she is sick, so I will be having a long weekend ahead. I hope you all enjoyed reading and I hope you all enjoy these Totoro cookies! As always, I hope you all have a great weekend and I will see you in the next post!
