Making A Lifestyle Change (Mom Edition)

So, last week I touched on what was going on with my life and my story, so this week I wanted to talk more about the lifestyle change that I have to be making in order to keep my fibromyalgia manageable.  This past week, I met with a wellness coach and a dietitian, along with my husband and daughter.  I was not surprised, however, I was a little impressed at some of the information that they told us.  For example, I knew that I needed to keep active, which means actually getting off of my butt and work out, and that I needed to lose weight.  Surprise, surprise…I am 5 ft and have always been petite, but with having my daughter, my metabolism and body has changed.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my body, I mean I made a human being and that’s amazing, but I know that I need a little tune up (okay, okay I really need a good tune up) and I have to breakup with all of my eating habits.

Well, the wellness coach told me that I needed to keep walking, start doing yoga, and to start doing some resistant band workouts.  So, basically I need to do low to moderate exercise, which I haven’t done in some time.  The husband and I used to do Beachbody and we loved it, but eventually life catches up to us and we would quit thinking that we will get back into it, but never did.  I mean I have hopes that I can eventually work up to start Beachbody again, but I want to get this managed before I can even think about doing those workouts.  Another thing that we talked about was my motivation, she asked, “What is your motivation?”  It was a no brainier that my motivation is my daughter, but I never really thought about the reasons why she was my motivator until now.  I mean, I am supposed to be her role model, the one that teaches her right from wrong.  I know that this is for me, but this is also for her.  For her to see that mom is trying to be healthier, trying to be in better shape, and being okay with asking for help.  It’s not always easy, heck I thought I knew everything, but obviously I needed help.  I want her to see that it’s okay to want to be a better version of yourself and that it’s okay to not know everything.  It’s about how you roll with it and how you start the process of moving forward.

Then, we met with the dietitian.  She was telling us that we needed to start slowly, but we mainly needed to get more vegetables and protein in our diet.  I was surprised at this because I thought we were doing good, but it turns out that we were not.  We also started talking about our weaknesses and I know mine are definitely soda and sweets, which I know that I can’t have.  She did tell us though that we can have them, but only for a treat which is no more than 3 times a week.  My jaw dropped at that news because like WOW!!  A dietitian said that sodas and sweets are okay, what world am I living in??  I know it’s not good all the time, but just the fact that she said that, I was amazed.  She also said that fast food is okay, but it is part of the treat thing and I like that because you know…we are parents and we do get way too tired to cook.  She also gave us some pointers on what to order if we did have to get take-out, which was really nice.  But, the main thing that she told us was that we needed to actually meal prep so that way we can keep track of the calories we take in for weight loss.  We tried it before with no luck of keeping track of it, so maybe with the motivation and determination, we can do it.

I mean it is going to take practice and a lot of motivation.  However, the main obstacle that is standing in our way is the two picky eaters that is living with me, which are my daughter and husband.  They both like chicken, but hardly eat vegetables.  Also, both me and my daughter’s weakness is Reese’s, but I think that will be our motivation to keep track with nutrition and exercise.  Every week that we accomplish everything, we can have a Reese’s.  Another tip that the dietitian told us was to start eating on smaller plates to trick our eyes…you know the saying, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.”  It’s like that.  If we eat on smaller plates, then it would look like that we are eating everything on our plate, but in reality, it is in smaller portions.  Then, it clicked…portion control plus smaller plates equals weight loss.  While we were doing Beachbody, we knew about meal prepping and portion control, but it never made sense to us until someone like a dietitian actually saying those words to us.

So, all in all, I don’t know what lies ahead of us in this lifestyle change.  It’s going to be a tough month for this mama and family to undergo this lifestyle change.  I know that we need to do this and that we will be better off once we do it, but man, I like my sweets and sodas.  So, I am going to miss you Reese’s, snack cakes, Root Beer, and cookies, but it’s not you, it’s me.  I need to lay low for a while before I can see you again.  And, here’s to gaining the knowledge of tips to help me and my family on this journey of getting our health back.  Wish us luck and I will share all of my tips and tricks with you all once I start!  Welp, it’s time for me to get going to make our meal plans and do our exercise.  I hope you enjoyed reading and as always, I will see you in the next post!  Have a great weekend!!
